Call for packaging free shopping at the Lynnpark Food Hall

The Issue

The demand for packaging free shopping opportunities is rapidly increasing and is already being met in more developed parts of the world. We have identified the Lynnpark Food Hall, as a viable starting point for seeing this change in Pretoria.

Many products in the Lynnpark Food Hall can already be purchased without the need for single use packaging. Greens (lettuce, spinach, herbs, etc.) without packaging aren’t available at any of the large supermarkets but are already available at the store. Furthermore, the quality of Lynnpark Food Hall's products (apples for example) far exceeds that of the packaging free options at larger shopping chains. The store is also conveniently situated in Lynnwood, the heart of the old east.

Taking into account all of these factors very few changes will need to be made to “convert” the store to a single-use-packaging free store. The biggest change will be to fill some of the containers currently used for nuts, etc. with dry goods such as flour, lentils and pastas so that shoppers can fill their own containers. Making more products that can be purchased using the consumer’s own containers (Tupperware) available would also be one of our suggestions. This especially at the store's butchery section as many omnivorous consumers are left with few to none packaging free options as far as dairy and animal proteins are concerned.
