Lyndale Drive 30km

The Issue

I've lived in the neighbourhood since 2012  and I love how Lyndale drive has evolved into a safe place for active transportation.  People of all ages use the space to bike, rollerblade, skateboard, walk their dogs and recreate together morning, day and evenings. I frequently see bike teams use Lyndale for their practices, École Provencher use Lyndale for their bike bus route, and children make use of Lyndale to practice sharing the road.

What a gem to have in our community!

It has come to my attention that some people want Lyndale to return to 50km an hour. I cannot be alone in believing that we have created a special space in our community and that it should remain as 30km.

The UN's World Health Organization recommends 30km as an optimal speed for spaces where cars and people share roads as studies have consistently shown that the likelihood of life-altering injuries is significantly reduced.

30km would still allow residents to access Lyndale, but will discourage people from cutting down Lyndale to speed through our neighbourhood as they try to avoid St.Mary's traffic. 30km will protect active transportation users and will ensure Lyndale continues to exist as an important section of Winnipeg's cycling network.

Seeing as the frequent changes to the rules on Lyndale have led to some confusion and frustration, I propose the following to ensure simplicity, consistency and safety:
- that Lyndale remain a 30km road year-round
- that the city introduce permanent traffic calming measures as needed to ensure Lyndale remains a low-traffic street

If you also love Lyndale drive and hope to keep it 30km an hour, please consider signing and sharing this petition. Let's show our support for a part of Norwood Flats that protects vulnerable road users and makes our neighbourhood such a special place to live.
