My friend Lydia Woods was only 15 years old. She should still be alive.

She was killed in a side-by-side accident—a vehicle designed to carry people at speeds capable of causing catastrophic injuries, yet one where occupants can still be exposed to ejection and rollover hazards.

Lydia is not just a statistic. She was my friend. She was someone's daughter, someone's family, someone's whole world.

And she is not the only one.

Across America, children and adults are being killed in side-by-side crashes. Vehicles roll over. Occupants are thrown out. People become trapped underneath. Families are left with an empty seat at the table.

We cannot keep treating these deaths as inevitable.

A recreational vehicle should not be allowed to have safety standards that leave so much room for an occupant to be thrown from it during a foreseeable rollover.

We are calling on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Congress to establish strong, mandatory nationwide safety standards for side-by-sides—including effective occupant containment, seat belts, rollover protection, stability testing, and stronger protection against ejection and crushing.

This is not about banning side-by-sides.

It's about making sure another 15-year-old doesn't become another name on a list of preventable deaths.

Lydia's life cannot be brought back.

But her death can mean something.
