Lunacare Cymru Pontypandy Woodlands: Enable the Second Wave of Re-Wilding

The Issue

Pont-Y-Pandy Woodlands has experienced a significant decline for at least eight years, particularly on the land owned by Caerphilly County Borough Council. Despite this, the recent community-led re-wilding trials in 2020 were a major success, proving that local action can restore neglected spaces when given the chance.

Creators, local volunteers, and environmental supporters from across Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and England are now prepared to begin a second wave of re-wilding. This new phase will be filmed as a series showcasing how Welsh businesses and community groups are responding to climate challenges through practical action and innovation.

To move forward, cooperation is required from all four landowners: Caerphilly County Borough Council, Linc Cymru, Gallagher Retail, and the remaining private owner. We call on the Welsh Government to intervene and support our effort so that re-wilding can take place without further delay.

The core request of this petition is for Caerphilly County Borough Council (CCBC) to grant a partition of the council-owned section of Pont-Y-Pandy Woodlands below Heol-Cae-Bach.

This would allow the establishment of an official research and regeneration company dedicated to developing climate-focused solutions for Wales and beyond. Creating such a research lab base in Caerphilly represents a significant opportunity for the region: long-term ecological study, practical restoration work, and community-supported re-wilding would all take place locally.

Because the woodland is divided among several owners, a lasting restoration requires full cooperation. We are therefore asking the Welsh Government, within its powers, to call upon CCBC and the other landowners to allow this venture to proceed.

The community has clearly demonstrated its passion for restoring Pont-Y-Pandy Woodlands. This petition reflects widespread local support for re-wilding, climate research, and the revitalisation of this landscape. The Lunacare Cymru team stands ready to complete the work and deliver a sustainable, enjoyable, nature-rich space for the public.

Thank you to every supporter who added their name. Together, we can give Caerphilly and the Pont-Y-Pandy Woodlands the future it deserves.
