Lucky Charms: An Elusive Treasure

Lucky Charms: An Elusive Treasure

The Issue

Lucky Charms look delicious. They look delicious, but I have no idea how they taste. Throughout my childhood, I saw Lucky Charms commercials, Lucky Charms merchandise, and the cereal itself on supermarket shelves, but from a great distance. It is the center of a culture, but this culture excludes many members of the global community. For too long, Muslims, Jews, and Vegans have only been able to see Lucky Charms from a distance. It's just been our luck.

The inclusion of pork collagen in the marshmallow gelatin prevents anyone from any of these communities from experiencing the anticipated joy of Lucky Charms. Doesn't that seem just a bit problematic? Is it just overlooked that people are denied access to something because of their religious or ethical beliefs?

We are living in a time where society is moving forward and opening up to accommodate people of all backgrounds and persuasions, yet such a large group is ignored in the realm of something so basic as cereal.

We call upon General Mills, and its CEO Jeff Harmening, to explore other possible ingredients for the marshmallows, thereby welcoming the Jewish, Islamic, and vegan, communities into the Lucky Charms culture.
