BANISH THE FINGERTIP RULE

BANISH THE FINGERTIP RULE
The Issue
I am petitioning against LPS dress code. It violates a students right to equal opportunities during the school day. Page 13 of the student handbook states that "general appearance must not disrupt the educational process.”Yet, how are crop tops, leggings, shorts, and a few rips in jeans disrupting the educational process? Rather, I think these rules and regulations are disrupting a students right to peacefully learn without being harassed by a teacher or principal. The student handbook also states that “all students shall dress conservatively and appropriately during school hours and at school activities”, so how is it okay for a male student to practice with his shirt off, or for volleyball players to wear spandex and cheerleaders to have short skirts? If you’re going to enforce dresscode, enforce it for the athletes too and not just the students who are trying to get an education. The handbook also states “students who come to school inappropriately dressed will be sent home” this denies the students right to learn because of what they are wearing. Just because our clothes might be “distracting” to the male population of the school. If you ask any male student if it is distracting for a female to wear shorts or for her shoulder to be exposed, he would say no. My schools dress code is very gender biased meaning it has way more restrictions on what a female student can and cannot wear to school rather than a male student. This outdated dress code is very sexist and needs to be changed!
