Loyola Wellness Center: Provide Condoms

The Issue

Repeatedly, evidence has been presented that condoms are incredibly effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies and STIs. The CDC states that latex condoms provide “an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of STD pathogens” (CDC). However, a study by the American College Health Association claims that despite this knowledge, only 50% of college students report using condoms every time or most times they engage in vaginal sex (Sage Journals). Providing access to condoms is one of the greatest ways to increase condom use and encourage young adults to engage in safe sex.

Right now, Loyola does nothing to provide condoms to students if they are looking to engage in safe sex, creating a culture of stigma and not providing students tools that will keep them safe. While the Wellness Center will perform STI testing, they are not providing the tools needed to prevent the spread of STIs in the first place. Further, convenience stores located around college campuses tend to inflate the price of condoms, increasing the barriers to condom access and decreasing the likelihood college students will engage in condom usage (Sage Journals). Schools providing condoms does not increase sexual activity; it only promotes safe sex!

The school should be doing more to encourage safe and healthy behavior for the students. A great starting point is having condoms available in the wellness center and advertising their accessibility to students. As he enters his time as president, it’s important that Dr. Reed takes a step to protect the health and safety of students. Various students on campus have called for the school to take steps to provide resources for students to engage in safe sex if they choose, thus far to no avail (Social Justice News Nexus). SIGN THIS PETITION to encourage Loyola University Chicago’s new president, Dr. Mark C. Reed, to provide free condoms for students in the Wellness Center.
