Improve LMU Dining Options and Quality

Improve LMU Dining Options and Quality
The Issue
Undergraduate tuition at Loyola Marymount University is $53,067 and the overall average total cost of attendance for undergraduate students living on campus is $73,715. It is important to note that the same population of undergraduate students living on campus are the same population of students who pay for on campus meal plans and rely on LMU dining services for food everyday. When comparing the quality of food served at LMU with food served at other universities with similar undergraduate tuition prices, LMU's dining options are not only far below the options at other expensive universities, but both the quality and availability of food on campus is absolutely inadequate in comparison to public universities who charge tens of thousands of dollars less in tuition. In addition to the high cost of tuition at LMU, when looking at the high prices for meals at places like the lair which can go anywhere from $5-$15 for meals that are below fast food quality, the costs are simply not justified by the product. We LMU students love and appreciate all the dining service workers, but feel that LMU admin needs to allocate far more resources and funds to the dining services. It is beyond absurd that multiple students, on different days and in different meals have found both alive and dead maggots in their meals at the Lair, which is the main dining hall on campus. We are asking the LMU admin to sit down with students, ask for student input moving forward, invest far more in food sources and ingredient providers, offer higher pay to incentivize more workers and to spend more time training dining workers to ensure higher food quality and food safety. For $73,713 students should not be finding maggots in their food and consistently be getting sick from the food on campus. Solutions beyond Iggys Cafe, Qdoba and Kikka Sushi need to be implemented, as these places all face the same problems. LMU has been consistently notified by student's parents via many methods since the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, yet their only solution has been food trucks which do not have healthy options, are very expensive and do not come on campus consistently. We ask LMU to make this an immediate priority in order to not tarnish the reputation of an otherwise amazing university to current students, alumni and prospective students.
