I, alongside many of my peers, firmly believe in our capacity to participate vitally in our democratic process. Many of us, though merely sixteen or seventeen, are politically conscious, mature, and profoundly aware of the impact the government's decisions have on us. While we are deemed old enough in New Zealand to drive, work, and even have children, it is perplexing that we are not entrusted with the right to vote. A voting age of 18 seems arbitrary and outdated, especially considering the substantial responsibilities already placed upon us.

According to a study from the Lowy Institute, young people around the world are increasingly engaged in political issues. This calls for a change in legislation, to lower the voting age and provide us, the young citizens of New Zealand, our deserved say in shaping our futures. After all, we are the direct recipients of the policies being enacted now.

Let us acknowledge the potential and maturity in our young citizens. Let us grant them the right to vote, aligning with the wealth of responsibilities they already shoulder. We call for the voting age in New Zealand to be lowered to 16 years. Sign the petition. Let our voices be heard.
