Lower the WAIT LIST & AGE for Breast Cancer Screening in CANADA

The Issue

In honor of a Saskatchewan woman, Nicole, a dedicated teacher, wife, daughter, grand-daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and most important mother of two who tragically lost her life to breast cancer in her 40s, this petition seeks to bring about a significant change in healthcare policy.

She, like too many young women, are not discovering their diagnosis early enough for effective treatment--a fact that could be different with earlier and more frequent screening!

Currently, Saskatchewan nominal breast cancer screening starts at the age of 50 (updated to 40 eventually, but over a long period of time), and the wait list for these potentially life-saving procedures is extremely long.

It is crucial that the age for breast cancer screenings be lowered, making them available to more women and increasing their chance of survival. See updates below! Did you know that in Ontario high-risk women start testing at age 30 while Saskatchewan has no plans at this time to screen "average" risk women in their 30's. Most women fall under average risk and go undetected until it's too late!

Statistics show that breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers). It is the second leading cause of death from cancer in Canadian women - around 25% of new cases and 13% of all cancer deaths occurred among women aged 40-49 in 2020 (source: Canadian Cancer Society).

Lowering the age for breast cancer screening aligns with current research indicating the efficacy of early detection. Moreover, reducing the wait list for these screenings can quickly bring them into the hands of those who need them most.

For the sake of women across CANADA we ask for urgent and favorable action on this matter! Your signature can help initiate this much-needed change - please sign this petition to lower the age for breast cancer screening in Saskatchewan and shorten the wait list now!

Our women can't wait any longer. Help us save lives!
