Lower the Voting Age to 16 in Rockville

Lower the Voting Age to 16 in Rockville

The Issue

CALLING ALL 16- AND 17-YEAR-OLD ROCKVILLE RESIDENTS! SIGN THIS PETITION IF YOU WANT TO VOTE IN LOCAL ELECTIONS! Why is this important? Well, at 16-17 years old, Rockville residents are working jobs, driving cars, attending schools, and actively contributing to the Rockville community. Should they not then be granted the right to vote for the decisions that impact them?

Decreasing the voting age to 16 directly empowers young people, giving them a key role in shaping decisions that impact their futures. Opening the doors to these youth would boost voter turnout and foster lifelong civic engagement. Voting is a habit, and engaging young people in the democratic process early increases the likelihood they will become consistent voters. At 16, many are still in school and benefit from structured civic education, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions. Allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to vote not only strengthens democratic participation but also instills a lifelong commitment to civic engagement.

If the voting age remains at 18, we risk continuing a cycle of disengagement and missed opportunities for long-term voter enthusiasm. In 2013, Takoma Park opened its doors to 16-17-year-old voters, leading to an immense increase in civic engagement. In the past decade, youth voter turnout has consistently been higher than the general population, and overall voter turnout in local elections has steadily grown over time. Most shockingly, 16- and 17-year-olds have participated at rates 200% higher than older voters, demonstrating their eagerness to engage.

The evidence is clear: lowering the voting age has a proven track record of boosting participation and enthusiasm for democracy. By enfranchising 16- and 17-year-olds, we build momentum for broader civic engagement at a time when many communities face declining turnout and an increased lack of political participation. Now is the time to act, sign this petition today to help make the city of Rockville a place where everyone’s voices are heard and votes considered!
