Lower the speed limit on Williamson Ave, Grey Lynn, Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa
The issue
For the past thirty years, Williamson Avenue, Ōpoutūkeha, Grey Lynn Auckland, Aotearoa has been my home. During this time, I've found far too many deceased birds and have heard countless stories of beloved pets meeting untimely ends. My neighborhood's harmony is shattered every time a car speeds down our street, oblivious to the life teeming around it. This isn't just a thoroughfare; it's a place where wildlife coexists with families, where our children play, and where our pets should feel safe.
The cars travelling at 50 km/h pose a significant threat not only to animals but also to pedestrians and cyclists. The current speed limit is not conducive for a residential area where safety is paramount. Studies, such as those published by the World Health Organization, consistently find that reducing speed limits leads to fewer accidents and fatalities. For instance, dropping the speed limit by just 5 mph can cut pedestrian fatalities by a significant percentage. It's time we take action for the safety and well-being of all Williamson Ave, Ōpoutūkeha, Grey Lynn residents, both human and non-human.
As residents of this cherished neighborhood, it's within our power to advocate for change. We propose that the speed limit on Williamson Ave, Ōpoutūkeha, Grey Lynn be reduced to ensure the safety of all community members and wildlife. I am advocating for the speed limit to be lowered from 50 km/h to 40 km/h. By working together, we can urge local authorities to reassess the current traffic policies and make the necessary modifications.
In terms of statistics, you have an 80% risk of death at 50 km/h compared to a 32% risk of death at 40km/h. https://at.govt.nz/about-us/news-events/evidence-shows-safe-speeds-are-saving-lives
Pollution, noise and health are all improved when you lower the speed limit. "Nitrogen dioxide from traffic is estimated to cause 2,000 deaths each year in New Zealand. Emissions are lowest with 20km/h speed limits." https://theconversation.com/lower-speed-limits-dont-just-save-lives-they-make-nz-towns-and-cities-better-places-to-live-194448
