Lower The Speed Limit on Weeden Creek Rd.

The Issue

Weeden Creek Road (County Rd EE) now has sidewalks and a bike lane, which is a wonderful addition for the Town of Wilson. These improvements create incredible opportunities for residents. Neighborhood kids can now safely bike and walk to school, and every evening I see many families and neighbors out enjoying the new sidewalks.

However, the current speed limit is a real safety concern. At 35 miles per hour, drivers often travel closer to 50mph. Studies show that a pedestrian hit by a vehicle at 35 mph has only a 50% chance of survival, while at 25 mph, that survival rate jumps to nearly 90%. The difference of just 10 miles per hour can literally mean the difference between life and death.

With sidewalks and increased pedestrian use, Weeden Creek Road now functions as a residential road. Lowering the speed limit to 25 mph would bring it in line with other residential areas in our community, while also reflecting national best practices for walkable neighborhoods. According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), reducing speed limits is one of the most effective ways to increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This stretch of Weeden Creek Rd. is similar to Union Ave. between Taylor Dr. and Business Dr., where the speed limit is already 25 mph.

This is not just about numbers though, it’s about people. Every day, kids use this road to get to school. Parents push strollers, grandparents go for walks, and neighbors ride bikes together. At the current speeds, they are vulnerable. By reducing the limit to 25 mph, we give our community a safer, more livable environment.

I urge you to sign this petition and encourage city and county officials to take action to lower the speed limit on Weeden Creek Road from 35 to 25 mph between South 12th Street. and South Business Drive. This is a small change with a huge impact: protecting our children, supporting healthy recreation, and creating a safer community for everyone.
