Lower the social media ban age in Australia to 13

Lower the social media ban age in Australia to 13
The issue
In Australia, the idea of raising the social media age limit to 16 has sparked significant concern among young people like myself and countless others. Not only does it limit our ability to communicate and readily access help in emergencies—imagine getting lost in a forest without a way to call for help—but it also seems overly restrictive given the many responsibilities and freedoms we gain at 15.
Consider this: by age 15, Australian teens can watch MA 15+ movies, face trial as adults, obtain a job, receive a Medicare card, manage a bank account, or even be in a relationship. Yet, under current proposals, we wouldn’t be allowed to use vital communication platforms such as TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, Roblox, or Reddit. This disparity in regulation seems illogical and unfair.
Moreover, social media is more than just a pastime; it's a significant platform for the young generation to express themselves, engage with societal issues, and develop digital literacy skills critical in today's world. By raising the age limit, we risk silencing youthful voices that have the potential to inspire and lead change. This is more than a restriction—it's an infringement on our right to freedom of expression.
Statistics show that more than 76% of Australians between the ages of 12-13 already use social media responsibly as a tool for education and communication. Instead of imposing a blanket age restriction, the government could invest in educational programs that promote safe and informed usage of social media for younger users.
We are calling on policymakers and concerned citizens to reconsider this age restriction and instead focus on empowering young Australians with the knowledge and tools to use social media responsibly. Ensuring that those aged 13 and up can legally access social media platforms would bridge the digital divide and uphold the rights of young individuals.
Join us in advocating for an inclusive and fair approach to social media access. Please sign this petition to lower the social media ban age in Australia to 13.
