The Issue

16 year olds have many rights in the United States but voting is not one of them, of which voting for public office could tie into those rights. 16 year olds could be able to drive, so anything relating to road construction in elections would start to concern them. Many jobs hire 16 year olds, so any election concerning minimum wage would concern them. And in around 30 states, the age of consent is 16 and a couple others, it is 17, so anything relating to abortion or birth control starts to concern them. As well, anything about STDs/STIs like HIV. Also 16 and 17 year olds would likely still be in school trying to get their high school diploma, so anything relating to school would concern them. And 16 or 17 year olds would likely be in or already taken their high school civics class by the time of election day. Voting would directly tie into what they are learning or have learned in class.

Countries where the voting age is at 16 include Guatemala, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Malta, and Austria. The vast majority of countries have the voting age at 18 but there are some outliers with the age at 16 and 17. Brazil has their driving age at 18. Which you could say the United States thinks 16 is the right age for someone to operate a thing that could kill/injure people (a car or a truck that could get in a crash with another one) but not to vote and Brazil feels that 16 is too immature to operate a thing that could crash into someone else (that could possibly cause serious injuries) but mature enough to vote.

If you argue that 16 is too immature to vote, 18 might not be as well because older by 2 years isn't that much older and our brains aren't fully developed until 25, so that means we should actually increase the voting age by 7 by the logic that 16 is too immature. They would likely have the same amount of civics education as 18 year olds. Though if you argue they would bring the voter turnout down, I could see how to combat it is to make election day a federal holiday (giving them the day off) and make teachers express the importance of voting in elections in classes every year to help encourage students to vote when they turn 16 or 17. As well for the argument that they copy their parents' vote, kids should have at least tried to grow out of their parents' shadows and form their own opinions by 16.

That's at least why I want to lower the voting age down to 16. I'm 17 right now and wish I and other people my age could be able to vote, especially since the 2024 is around the corner when I'm writing this petition and that looks like it is going to be a big election and some 16 or 17 year olds could have a strong opinion on it.

EDIT: The 2024 election has passed. This wasn’t passed as an amendment by then. Since this next year is odd, it is an off year election with not much to be voted on. The year after, 2026, would have gubernatorial elections in most states. Governors are the most well known role at the state level and 16 and 17 year olds could have strong opinions for those as well. Presidential elections could have stronger opinions but still.
