Lower the Legal Smoking Age to 18, Aligning It With Gambling Age

The Issue

At 18, I was taken to the casino by acquaintances and allowed to gamble. This was an exhilarating experience, one that I was trusted to make responsibly at my age. However, I bafflingly remain unable to make the choice to buy or use a vape. This incongruity struck me as unjust. Despite being regarded mature enough to risk my paycheck at the blackjack table, I am somehow seen as too immature to choose whether or not to smoke.

The minimum age to purchase tobacco products and e-cigarettes has been raised to 21 across the United States. This wasn't always the case; until recently, teenagers could purchase these products at 18. I believe this shift infringes upon our rights, given the other responsibilities and freedoms granted to us as adults at 18.

According to the U.S. Constitution, turning 18 entitles one to certain privileges and responsibilities, such as voting in state and federal elections, serving on a jury, registering for the Selective Service, and engaging in consensual activities. Additionally, it grants the ability to get married, gamble in states where it's legal, and even join the military.

By the age of 18, we're expected to step forward and make huge, life-altering decisions, yet at the same time, we are denied the right to decide whether or not to smoke. This does not appear to be a balanced interpretation of adulthood, rights, and responsibilities.

I implore the change-makers reading this to reconsider the age restriction imposed on purchasing tobacco products and e-cigarettes. Aligning it with the gambling age and expectations of other adult decisions at 18 would be a fairer reflection of our nation's constitutional principles.

Please sign this petition if you agree with the adjustment of vaping and smoking age regulations to mirror other adult responsibilities.
