Lower the Legal Age for Tattoos and Piercings to 16

The Issue

Growing up, I've always wanted to express myself through a tattoo or a few more piercings, but the barrier has always been the same—my parents. Now, at 14, I feel mature enough to make decisions about my own body, yet the law doesn't reflect this sense of personal autonomy. It's frustrating to want to express one's identity in such a meaningful way and be prevented by age restrictions that don't consider individual maturity.

Currently, the legal age to get tattoos and piercings without parental consent is 18. This blanket law does not take into account that many teenagers, like myself, are fully capable of making informed decisions about their bodies. We believe that 16-year-olds should have the right to make personal decisions about tattoos and piercings without needing parental permission. At 16, many young people are already entrusted with significant responsibilities: driving cars, working part-time jobs, and in some countries, even consenting to marriage.

Lowering the legal age to 16 for tattoos and piercings would not only acknowledge the maturity of many young individuals but also empower them with a sense of ownership and responsibility over their own bodies. Other countries have already set this precedent successfully, with no significant negative outcomes. For example, in Germany, 16-year-olds can obtain tattoos with parental approval, illustrating that young people can handle such decisions responsibly.

It's crucial for the law to evolve and recognize the ability of teenagers to make their own choices. We propose implementing a system where tattoo and piercing artists have the discretion to assess the maturity of a potential client, similar to how decisions are made regarding teenage employment suitability.

By adjusting the legal age to 16, society can embrace a more progressive outlook that respects young people's rights and their ability to decide what they do with their bodies. We urge legislatures to consider this change, allowing us the freedom to express ourselves in this profound way.

Please sign this petition to support the change in legislation, so that I, and many others, can take ownership of our self-expression.
