The issue

My friend, who is just 15 years old, relies on her phone as a lifeline. Social media has become her sanctuary, offering connections and support that are essential for her wellbeing. Unfortunately, her home environment is far from supportive. Her parents are abusive, and in the chaos of her home life, her access to social media provides her with the essential support and companionship she desperately needs.

Currently, the legal age for social media use is unnecessarily restrictive, disallowing younger teens who could benefit immensely from these platforms. Lowering the legal age for social media to 13 could make a world of difference for countless young people who, like my friend, rely on these digital connections for comfort, support, and validation.

Social media platforms can be incredibly beneficial for teenagers. Research shows that they can provide social support, foster a sense of community, and even offer educational resources. A study by Pew Research indicates that nearly 70% of teens view social media as a form of peer support. Furthermore, these platforms can be harnessed to learn new skills and explore hobbies which can positively impact mental health.

However, it is essential that the conversation around the legal age for social media use considers these positive aspects. While concerns about online safety are valid, most platforms have robust measures in place to protect young users. Additionally, educating teens on safe use can further mitigate risks.

By lowering the age requirement, we empower more young people to be part of a broader community, to express themselves, and to seek help or companionship when needed. The right to connect and communicate should be accessible to all teenagers, providing them with the tools to navigate their world with more confidence and support.

We urge lawmakers and social media companies to reconsider age restrictions and recognize the benefits these platforms can offer to teenagers. For many, these online connections are not just beneficial, but necessary parts of their daily lives.

Please support this petition to lower the legal age for social media use to 13 and offer more teenagers a digital refuge and an opportunity for positive engagement. Sign the petition today.
