The Issue

The pain of losing loved ones to cancer, not because their illness was untreatable, but because the life-saving drugs were beyond their financial reach, is unimaginable. Sadly, this is a harsh reality for many of us who have watched friends and family members suffer and die when life-saving treatments existed but were inaccessible due to exorbitant costs. Cancer, a relentless disease, does not discriminate by income, and yet the treatments that could grant patients a fighting chance often do.

Many cancer patients are drenched in anxiety not only from their diagnosis but from the fear of financial ruin. The American Cancer Society reports that the national expenditures for cancer care surpassed $200 billion in 2020 in the United States alone, with drug prices rising exponentially. A 2017 Mayo Clinic study highlighted that the price of cancer drugs more than doubled in a decade, straining both private citizens and public health insurance systems.

The vital drug Imatinib, crucial for treating chronic myeloid leukemia, soared from an initial cost of $30,000 per year to over $120,000 within a few years, illustrating a broader issue of price inflation across the board for cancer medications. Without intervention, these trends risk pushing life-saving cancer treatment permanently out of reach for many families and individuals.

What we are calling for is a decisive and compassionate policy framework focused on scaling down the cost of necessary, life-saving cancer medications. Lawmakers must work with pharmaceutical companies to find common ground that ensures profitability does not come at the expense of human lives. For instance, adjusting existing patent laws to increase generic drug availability can significantly cut costs without compromising treatment quality. Pharmaceutical companies and government bodies should be incentivized to support cancer research and development, with prioritization on affordability.

By signing this petition, you are taking a stand with those who have been burdened both by the disease and the financial obstacles to treatment. The need for affordable, accessible cancer care is urgent. Let us urge policymakers and pharmaceutical companies to act now to bring down the cost of cancer drugs before it’s too late.
