Lower the Age Requirements for U.S. Senators and the President to 25

The Issue

Introduction:

The United States Constitution was designed as a living document — one that can evolve with the needs of the people it serves. Today, many Americans believe that our government’s age requirements for the highest offices no longer reflect the realities of modern society or the abilities of younger generations.

Current Requirements:

President & Vice President: At least 35 years old

U.S. Senator: At least 30 years old

U.S. Representative: At least 25 years old

Proposed Change:

We call for an amendment to the Constitution to lower the age requirements for President, Vice President, and U.S. Senator to 25 years old.

Why This Matters:

Modern Knowledge & Technology: Younger Americans are more in touch with emerging technologies, new economic challenges, and evolving social issues.

Representation: Millions of Americans under 35 are deeply affected by national policies but cannot fully participate at the highest levels of leadership.

Historical Precedent: The 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18, recognizing that younger citizens are capable of responsible civic participation.

Global Perspective: Many nations allow leaders under 35, and those leaders have brought fresh solutions to old problems.

Our Goal:

This petition is not about forcing an immediate change, but about starting a national conversation and encouraging Congress to explore new ways for younger Americans to serve. Even if the age requirements remain, we ask that Congress create additional pathways for young leaders to serve in high-impact advisory, policy-making, or junior leadership roles to prepare them for future service.

We, the undersigned, believe in a government that reflects the people it serves — including its younger citizens. We call on Congress to hear our voices and take the first steps toward opening the doors of leadership to more Americans.
