Currently, the minimum age to obtain a learner's permit in most states is 15 or 16. However, we believe that lowering this age requirement to 14 would provide numerous benefits. This change would allow teenagers to gain more experience behind the wheel before obtaining their full license, potentially reducing accident rates among new drivers. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), teen drivers have crash rates nearly four times those of drivers aged 20 and older per mile driven. By allowing teens an extra year or two of supervised driving practice, we could help reduce these statistics significantly. We understand that safety is paramount and therefore propose that additional restrictions be placed on these younger permit holders such as mandatory adult supervision at all times and stricter penalties for traffic violations. We urge lawmakers to consider this change in policy for the safety and benefit of our young people on the roadways.
