The Issue

As a local consumer and a proud member of the New Mexico cannabis community, I’ve seen firsthand how current tax policies are hurting our state. Right now, a combined tax rate that can climb as high as 21% is making legal cannabis less affordable for everyday folks, and that carries a hidden cost that affects us all.

Why this matters to you:

Safety First: When legal prices are too high, it pushes consumers toward the unregulated black market. This means people are buying products that haven’t been lab-tested, tracked, or safety-checked.

Supporting Our Economy: We want our local businesses—the ones that hire our neighbors and contribute to our community—to thrive. When taxes are too high, customers walk away, and those businesses struggle to stay open.

Learning from Others: Look at states like Colorado. Their history of excessive taxation has inadvertently fueled a massive illegal market, with tens of thousands of pounds of untested, illegal marijuana seized in just one year. We don’t want that for New Mexico.
We believe that a more balanced tax structure is the key to a healthy future. By lowering the tax burden, we can encourage consumers to shop legally, ensure the products on the shelf are safe, and keep our money working right here in our own communities.

Our Goal: We are urging New Mexico legislators to rethink the current cannabis tax structure. A fair, reasonable tax rate is the best way to support local shops, reduce illegal activity, and keep our state’s cannabis industry safe and sustainable for everyone.

Please sign this petition to tell our lawmakers: It’s time for fair taxes on New Mexico cannabis. Simplified Logic: You keep the Colorado fact, but you use it as a clear warning rather than just dumping a statistic, which makes the argument feel stronger and less "academic."
