Lower Speed Limit in Emporia Neighborhood to 35 MPH

Lower Speed Limit in Emporia Neighborhood to 35 MPH
The Issue
My heart aches with the loss of my beloved cat, tragically killed by a speeding car in our neighborhood. As if that weren't enough, my surviving cat has suffered his own harrowing brush with traffic. We live directly opposite a bus stop, a daily gathering point for residents of all ages, yet the current speed limit of 45 MPH poses a constant threat to the safety of our loved ones.
Families thrive in our community here in Emporia, VA, where children play outdoors, and life is meant to be enjoyed – not feared. The streets are meant to be a safe haven, not a danger zone. Sadly, they have become perilous, and we bear witness to the alarming risks that high speeds present. The heartbreak of losing a beloved pet cannot be overstated, but the potential for human tragedy is even more grave.
This is why I am urgently calling on local authorities to lower the speed limit in our neighborhood from 45 MPH to 35 MPH. This change is not just sensible; it is necessary to protect our community's children, pets, and all residents. In cities like Emporia, community members who have succeeded in reducing speed limits have frequently reported a significant decrease in traffic-related accidents. Statistics from the Federal Highway Administration indicate that reducing speed limits, especially in residential areas, can lead to a decrease in speed-related crashes by up to 20%.
To enforce this change, we propose regular monitoring to ensure compliance and the installation of speed bumps as a deterrent to speeding. Let’s make our neighborhood a model of safety and care.
I am reaching out to neighbors, friends, and concerned citizens alike: stand with me to advocate for a safer environment. Please sign this petition to urge Emporia City Council to take the necessary steps to protect our neighborhood and preserve the sense of safety and security we all deserve. Together, we can prevent more tragic accidents and make Emporia a safer place for everyone.
