Lower Speed Limit and Install Sign Brummer Elementary

The Issue

The safety of our children is of paramount importance, especially when it comes to their daily commute to school. Brummer Elementary School in South Lyon, MI, currently faces a significant safety concern due to the high-speed limit in its surrounding area. Urgent action is required to ensure the safety and well-being of our children and the entire school community.

South Lyon, MI, is a growing community with increasing traffic volumes. Brummer Elementary, like many other schools, is situated along a busy road where cars often exceed safe speeds. In addition, the redesign of the Rushton/Doane intersection poses a concern for increased speeds in this area. This situation creates a grave threat to the students as well as to their families and school staff commuting during peak hours.

Research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that lowering speed limits can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and the severity of injuries when collisions do occur. Implementing a school zone speed limit, typically 25 mph or lower, would drastically enhance the safety of all pedestrians in the area. The current limit of 45 MPH in a school zone is higher than 25 MPH that is recommended by the State of Michigan.  Moreover, installing a flashing electronic speed limit sign can act as a constant reminder for drivers to slow down during the posted hours, thereby reducing the chances of potential accidents.

By lowering the speed limit to school zone standards and installing a flashing electronic speed limit sign, we can create a safer environment not only for the students of Brummer Elementary but also for the entire South Lyon community. This action aligns with our commitment to ensure every child has a safe journey to and from school, free from the threat posed by high-speed traffic.

Please join us in advocating for this vital change. Sign this petition to urge the Livingston County Road Commission to prioritize the safety of our children by making these necessary adjustments to traffic regulations around Brummer Elementary. Together, we can make a difference in enhancing the safety and quality of life in our community. Every signature counts towards creating a safer South Lyon for all!
