Currently in New Jersey, the age to vote in school board elections is 18. Our goal is to change that in Emerson and lower the voting age to 16. As 16-year-olds, we have the right to drive, to work, and we even have to pay income taxes. But we can’t vote in elections regarding our future,

It is very important to us that the students of Emerson Junior Senior High School are able to vote for the people who are in charge of our district’s budget, co-curricular programs, disciplinary issues, and all other school policies. Signatures from all grades are welcome - if this legislation is approved, some students will be able to vote as early as their sophomore year.

This petition will be brought to the Mayor Dipaola, the mayor of Emerson. Our group is also working on gaining support from State Senator Holly Schepisi. 

 The voting age change has already been done in the Newark School District, let’s make it happen in Emerson too.
