Lower Retirement Age for Caregivers of Elderly Parents

The Issue

I am a 59-year-old woman, working 30 hours a week, struggling with my own health issues. My 82-year-old mother needs care and I want to be the one who provides it. But financial constraints make it impossible for me to leave my job. This is not just my story; there are countless others like me who are caught in this predicament.

We propose that the government reduces the retirement age for people who have elderly parents to look after. This would not only allow us to provide our loved ones with the care they need but also save on government caring costs.

According to a study by AARP, family caregivers in America provided an estimated $470 billion worth of unpaid care in 2013 alone (AARP Public Policy Institute). The same study revealed that if these caregivers were replaced by paid home-care professionals, it would cost significantly more.

By reducing retirement age for those caring for elderly parents, we can alleviate some of this burden from families while saving on public funds allocated towards professional caregiving services.
