Unemployment benefits for Military Spouses

Unemployment benefits for Military Spouses
The Issue
Louisiana is one of four states that do not offer unemployment benefits for Military Spouses who have to leave a job when moving to a new duty station with their Active Duty spouse. Louisiana claims that the move is voluntary and therefore it is not justifiable to cover a military spouse for unemployment benefits. This has affected me along with other military spouses especially during this pandemic. I was a full-time federal employee in Louisiana and my Active Duty Army spouse received orders to a new duty location. This move, called a PCS (Permanent Change of Station), is not voluntary but required of soldiers. The orders received for a PCS also include the names of the soldiers dependents (ie. spouse and children). If my spouse would move and I stay behind at my job, it would cause financial and mental hardship upon all members of our family. That would mean 2 housing payments and a family torn apart. Therefore, viewing the move of a military spouse due to a PCS should not be seen as voluntary. This pandemic has also made it much harder to find new employment in our current location due to factors such as virtual learning and the financial hardship that some companies are facing and therefore aren’t adding new jobs. I am requesting that Louisiana is added to the other 46 states that allow for Active Duty Military Spouses to receive unemployment benefits when moving due to a PCS. Louisiana has a large military community. This change will be of much support to this community and show care for those fighting for the freedom of American citizens.
