"The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has granted authorization to Texas Gas for the construction and operation of a gas compressor station to be built adjacent to the Miami Whitewater Park directly beside a campground.
The compressor station project is part of a larger proposed Northern Supply Access Project that will meet the “increased demand” of customers, according to an order-issuing certificate, which gives permission for Texas Gas to begin the process for the transmission facility.
Opponents of the compressor station express concerns over gas leaks, possible explosions or fires, habitat fragmentation, water contamination, air pollution, health hazards, noise pollution and waste disposal.
Over the years, across the country, numerous complaints about compressor stations have been documented.
The stations release methane gas and other toxins, which contributes to global warming and could pose health concerns for residents visiting the park while camping or within striking distance of the compressor station.
The campground within the Miami Whitewater Park is located 1,400 feet southeast of the compressor station site.
Toxins released into the atmosphere can result in health hazards, according to residents of other communities where compressor stations have been built.
Chemicals in the air may cause shortness of breath, headaches, chronic sore throats, frequent nosebleeds, burning eyes, skin irritation, dizziness, thyroid problems, nervous system impacts nausea and impact the nervous and respiratory systems of people living within two miles of a compressor station, according to a Southwest Pennsylvania Environmental Health Project internal review.
It’s been reported that a radioactive gas called Radon-222 is emitted from compressor stations, and during “blow-downs” these toxins can deposit into neighboring communities, according to a US Geological Survey open file report.
There are residences located about 2,200 feet east-northeast of the station site, and a group of residences west of the station site are located about 1,880 feet northwest.
The nearest residence in the Miami Trace Condominium community is approximately 2,440 feet southwest from the compressor station site, according to FERC’s report.
Harrison Junior high school is about a half-mile away from the intended site.
As well, the compressor station emits a low frequency hum. Sound buffering provided by Texas Gas may mitigate the noise pollution, but opponents to the station feel that campers at the Miami Whitewater Park will be adversely affected by the humming coming from the compressor.
The constant humming may also have a psychological effect that may be detrimental to wildlife health. The humming can be heard up to several miles away, depending on the wind, according to sources."
