Revise the LCPS Retake Policy
The Issue
For the 2020-2021 school year, Loudoun County Public Schools has implemented a revision to the retake policy. In this revision, it has made the maximum retake grade on summatives an 80%, or a B-. Many students, including myself, are very upset with this change. It has caused grades to drop, and students feel less encouraged to do retakes, even if they have a grade they are not happy with. For example, if a student gets a C+ on a test, they may not feel like a retake is worth it since they wouldn’t be able to earn many points. If a student gets over an 80% on a summative retake, it will still be bumped down to a B-. When I've gotten bad grades on tests before, I know I could retake for full credit which encouraged me to study harder and seek extra help for what I was struggling with. Now, when students need it most in these stressful times of distance learning, they can't get full credit. I as well as all students should be able to take a test without wondering if we would have better chances sticking with a bad grade, rather than a retake grade.
