Annabelle Lenz started this petition to Loudoun County Public Schools

As a high school student, I am responsible for paying for my car and gas. My parents do not want to throw down $200 for me to park, and I cannot afford to pay for it myself. Additionally, as an athlete, I owe $150 to play and another $150 for senior dues. For athletes participating in sports all three seasons, they owe $450 just to play. Although these are optional activities, these are the aspects of high school that students enjoy. There may be exceptions for low-income families, but the families who are in between low-income and high-income cannot prioritize their spending towards parking passes.

In previous years, prices of parking passes were at $25 a semester and have increased to $100 per semester. While this gives the county more money, the county is already getting money through various different expenses: the additional $200 is not necessary. At public college campuses, in the state of Virginia, the cost for an annual parking pass is around $300. Students are paying to stay at those schools and are often living close to their classes; whereas, high school students are forced to pay $200 to park somewhere they are required to be.

While there other other options for students, it begins to cause complications. Students are given the option of school buses, provided by the school district, but not everyone has access to a bus. Personally, I live a mile and a half from the school, which is a 30 minute walk. Because I technically live inside the radius, the nearest bus stop to me is nearly half a mile away, and there are kids who have to walk even further than I do to get to the bus. In the fall and winter, as it begins to get colder, the conditions become miserable for students. Additionally, it could be suggested that students park in surrounding neighborhoods, but that becomes frustrating for the residents of that area. I have personally known people to receive angry letters from residents after parking in the neighborhood next to Potomac Falls High School, even though they were not on their property. The neighborhood gets full, and the people living there, especially in townhouses, have nowhere to park. If a student has to park elsewhere, and they are running behind, it causes them to be even later because they will have to run over from outside the school lot.

At Potomac Falls High School, every couple of days, a whole section of the parking lot is blocked off and saved for the band. These spots could be used, yet there are still many available. There are numerous teachers that park in the student parking lot, even though there is a parking lot provided for them. At Potomac Falls there is plenty of space; therefore, there is no need to charge for the spots. However, for the students who have already paid or students who wish to pay, could have their own spot that they pick, where they could design and paint it in whatever way they would like, as long as it is appropriate, of course. The goal in signing this petition is to bring down or even eliminate the parking pass costs at schools who have the space and where there is no fight over finding a spot.
