Protect your health! Demand the full chemical exposure list from the Aliso Canyon Blowout.

The Issue

To date, Southern California Gas (SCG), despite numerous health agency requests, has not produced the complete list of the chemicals and substances that approximately 1.5 million residents were exposed to before, during, and after the largest methane and poly-toxin blowout in U.S. history. The constituents of the blowout include: (unscrubbed) gas, the residual chemicals and crude oil from decades of oil extraction, the fracking fluids used in the facility and at the point of gas origination, and the muds and chemicals used in the 7 failed well kill attempts, where the material was aerosolized and wind-spread throughout the San Fernando, Simi, and Santa Clarita Valleys.

The Community Advisory Group (CAG) for the $25M Aliso Canyon Disaster Health Research Study, administered by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, believes the complete list of chemicals is critically important in ensuring the quality of the comprehensive, science-driven health study which is imminent.

Of the chemicals known, there are many carcinogens such as benzene, formaldehyde, uranium, and cadmium, among many others. These chemicals are associated with an array of serious health effects such as cancer, COPD, Silicosis, neurological impacts, auto-immune disorders, and birth defects to name a few.  However, we have not been provided the amounts, frequency, or duration of these exposures.  Numerous health experts and physicians have informed us that without the knowledge of the frequency/duration of the exposure, it is difficult to ensure a health study that is able to document the short and long term effects on the people exposed. In addition, there is an undetermined amount of unknown chemicals and substances which also have not been provided. It was documented during the blowout that this soup of toxins (an unknown composition of chemicals) was found on our cars, outdoor furniture, patios, pools, in our homes, and even children's toys.  Most importantly, no information exists to tell us how the human body reacts to exposure of these chemicals when they are mixed together.

In order for the Scientific Oversight Committee, who will determine the scope of the $25M Aliso Canyon Disaster Research Health Study, to properly identify areas to study, the complete list of chemicals is absolutely necessary.

We, the undersigned, urge the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Los Angeles City Council to take immediate and thorough action, including all legal means, in the interest of public health to secure from SCG the complete list of chemicals and substances, along with amounts, frequency, and duration, that the communities were exposed to before, during, and after the Aliso Canyon Blowout Disaster. Without this information, the $25M Research Health Study will be marginalized and potentially rendered irrelevant.
