Permanent Homeless Shelter at Motel 6 in Hacienda Heights

The Issue

At the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic, the County of Los Angeles, along with Governor Gavin Newsom, decided to launch Project Roomkey to provide temporary shelter for the homeless population at several sites throughout the County.

At the specific site at Motel 6 in Hacienda Heights, 1172 S. 7th Street Avenue, residents of Hacienda Heights have seen a dramatic increase in the presence of nude transients in residential neighborhoods, human fecalmatter and urine at our parks and our sidewalks, increased amount of tents, intoxicated and/or mentally ill transients harrassing patrons at our local businesses, automobile break-ins, loitering at our local businesses, and more. We have also seen an increased presence of police and paramedics at this this location which further stretches the ability for them to service the residents of the community. This location is a neighbor to many residential homes and schools, and puts our children at risk walking to and from school.

We OPPOSE the County forcing the decision of making this Motel 6 a permanent homeless shelter. A decision as impactful as this should be decided by the residents of Hacienda Heights and not be forced upon us by our County Supervisors.

Please reconsider the decision to make this location a permanent homeless shelter, and let the residents of Hacienda Heights determine whether or not we want a permanent homeless shelter in our community.
