PETITION: I Support Safe, Healthy, Emergency Housing during COVID-19  

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors:

Governor Gavin Newsom announced a new plan (Project Roomkey) to lease 15,000 rooms as a way to house those experiencing homelessness. Project Roomkey focuses on hotels and motels in counties with high rates of Covid-19 positive cases as well as individuals experiencing homelessness.

Residents have demanded solutions to the homelessness crisis for years and have passed ballot measures to address this issue by wide margins. This underlines a broad willingness by Californians to help our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness. Project Roomkey is needed now more than ever due to the global pandemic that has wreaked havoc in many communities across the state. 

Project Roomkey is designed to make temporary housing available to individuals experiencing homelessness during a national emergency by providing:

• Covid-19 and other health screenings of applicants prior to participating in the program.
• A hotel or motel room with essential amenities.
• Food and proper nutrition.
• 24/7 security detail for the facility.
• Nurses and social workers for project participants.

As a resident of Los Angeles County who cares deeply about the health and well-being of all members of our community, I support Project Roomkey and similar efforts to make sure those experiencing homelessness have access to safe, clean housing during this time of crisis. I also support efforts to secure hotel and motel accommodations in communities across Los Angeles County and the state to allow persons in need to be housed near the neighborhoods they currently live in. I recognize not every community in southern California has motel/hotel facilities available, however many do and we all need to work together to support those in need at this time.
