Make The Melrose Avenue Business District Safer Now

Make The Melrose Avenue Business District Safer Now
The Issue
Nuisance Businesses + Street Vending = Murder. Robberies. Other Violent Crime.
Neighbors, merchants and visitors to the Melrose/Fairfax Village area of Los Angeles deserve a safer space to live, work and shop. Our business districts have been hijacked by several bad business operators whose operational models create a dangerous atmosphere and opportunities for aggressive behavior, robberies, and, as we’ve seen over the last five months, murder.
We, the residents, merchants, and visitors to the Melrose and Fairfax Business Districts demand that city officials and departments coalesce to formulate substantive, meaningful regulations of operations to protect the interests and safety of customers, businesses, and surrounding neighborhoods. These nuisance businesses create neighborhood issues due to their business practices i.e. having promotions where customers line up for limited edition merchandise, which in turn leads to large crowds gathering, illegal street vending to waiting customers, and cultivates opportunities for street gambling and violence.
With incidents spilling into the side streets, neighbors are heavily burdened with the fall-out that sets off countless calls for service, eating up an incalculable amount of resources needed elsewhere.
How Do We Fix This? In The Interim, We Want The Following:
1. NO GO ZONE to be approved for NO SIDEWALK VENDING along the Melrose Ave business corridor temporarily because of the dangerous conditions that exist from violent crimes -- like the recent countless armed robberies and murder.
2. Identify specific new merchant operating models that need realistic, updated and ENFORCEABLE regulations to limit the scope of their operations (along the lines of C.U.P.s used for restaurants, nightclubs, and bars) prohibiting outdoor line-ups, outdoor promotions/events and limit store activities to INDOORS only limited to capacity set forth by regulations by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.
3. Limits placed on how many specific businesses can operate within a given area or zone - much like limiting the over-concentration of liquor stores, bars, and restaurants.
We support a clean, vibrant business district that includes merchants that operate in a manner that is responsible, safe, secure, and supportive to the surrounding community.
