Reduce Cuesta speed bumps

Reduce Cuesta speed bumps
The Issue
We support traffic calming on Cuesta drive, but speed tables should be consistent with the US Department of Transportation guidelines of 3-3.5 inches. Several independent measurements by residents have found the speed tables on Cuesta to be up to 8 inches in height.
We are concerned about one or more of the below issues with the current speed tables:
1. Emergency Vehicles: Cuesta drive is designated as a primary emergency response route used by Fire Engines and Ambulances to save homes and lives. An extra minute of travel can have a life and death impact. It is also a primary route to El Camino hospital and bumps will make it difficult to treat patients in an ambulance.
2. Accessibility: The Americans with Disabilities Act applies to speed bumps. Abnormally high bumps make Cuesta, the main route to town, inaccessible to people with nerve or back injuries.
3. The extension of the speed table into the bike lanes is unexpected and could lead to accidents, especially at night.
4. Unusually high bumps are damaging cars as can be seen by scrapes on the pavement.
We urge the Los Altos Complete Streets Commission and City Council to take swift action to reduce the bumps to the national standard of 3-3.5 inches.
