The children of the instrumental music programs have spent countless hours practicing, performing, receiving tutoring; some for ten years or more. Their families have spent thousands on their children's instruments, donations, travel, festivals, and general support for the programs. The Los Alamitos High School Jazz Band is an award winning and internationally recognized band, under the instruction of an award winning director, Mr. John Rush. John Rush has been an integral part of the children's and the programs success and his absence has adversely affected the kids' performance and confidence.

Some musicians, such as those in Jazz I, when being critiqued post performance are advised that they play at a college level.  Many college level jazz bands would not have attempted to play one of the pieces Mr. Rush challenged his musicians with last year.  Mr. Rush has worked with some of these students for many years and knows their potential.  He encourages, critiques and praises his students on a regular basis.  Our musicians are definitely being taught by a "skillful, motivated, and caring teacher who inspires and nourishes student learning".  We believe the LAHS Jazz Band Program, as well as his other programs, will continue to suffer without John Rush's vision, direction and dedication. The uncertainty regarding his return is making the students and parents nervous at a time when we should be preparing for the upcoming festival season.  

We ask that you please reassess the school or districts decision to remove John Rush from the classroom.  Our intentions are purely to preserve the integrity of this extraordinary group of musicians.
