Localize the Legendary Gal Game to the West: Amagami to Steam, PS5, Xbox, and Nintendo
The Issue
Hello,
I share a passion and love interest in anime and video games. I watched Amagami for the first time in 2017 with my brother and we absolutely loved it. I loved the story arcs, the art, and the animation of the amazing series.
Amagami is about a teenage boy named Junichi Tachibana who is stood up on a date on Christmas Eve. Ever since this, he loses total confidence in himself with love and girls in fear of being rejected again. Lucky for him he still has a chance to at love when he encounters several girls who he is interested in: Haruka Morishima, the energetic and popular upperclassman with a love for cute things; Kaoru Tanamachi, his childhood friend who harbors secret feelings for him; Sae Nakata, the timid transfer student who is shy around men; Ai Nanasaki, a girl on the swim team who has a bad first impression of Junichi; Rihoko Sakurai, a childhood friend with a love for sweets; and Tsukasa Ayatsuji, a seemingly perfect class representative who has a hidden dark side. As Christmas Eve approaches, Junichi can only hope that this will be the year he will finally spend the holidays with the one he truly loves.
When I found out that Amagami was based on a game after I had watched it, I went to see if it was playable with my Switch or PlayStation. Unfortunately for me though, Amagami was created for the PS2 in 2009 for Japan only and had no updates/remasters/remakes nor plans for an official English translation. Japan on the other hand, received updated versions of the game in 2011 and 2014 with improved graphics and performance for the PSP and PSVita. When Amagami released in Japan for the first time it was a really big hit like the game before Amagami, Kimikiss. The popularity of the game was soon given an anime adaption due to the success of the game. When I realized that the game was not only very old and wasn't even playable in my language I was a bit bummed out. There are fan-made patches of the game, through hacking but for me personally, I'm not that big into it and I just have lack of trust for patches. Firstly, there’re many flaws such as bugs that slow down performance, cause visual glitches, choppiness, etc. and I don't want to risk my pc or console getting damaged. Even if you somehow made it work many people like me either don't have the experience to properly patch the game or just don't like unofficial translations from the start. I also did some further digging and there are some parts of the game that aren't even done or completed which leaves the patched translations of the game incomplete.
Enterbrain now part of the company Kadokawa as of today haven't been doing anything in the gaming industry in recent years and slowed down dramatically. Their last games being released for the PS4, 3ds, or PSP, which are considered retro consoles today. Putting that into play if no games are being released it makes sense that Amagami hasn't been touched. I did some research about the company and as of right now Kadokawa are struggling financially. They have been making lots of animes that aren't getting popular and doing a lot of projects that aren't getting lots of attention. So, I think in their shoes making another game is the least of their worries. Even if they were to remaster or remake the game it would take a monstrous amount of money that probably they don't even have. Amagami was made for the PS2 in 2009. They used a super old engine to build the game on a very old software that isn't used today. In other words, porting the game would be impossible and they would have to redo the entire game from scratch. On top of that they would need to recreate contracts with all the voices of the game again because they used a super dated software for that as well. So, they would have to redo the game from the start, recreate contracts for the voices of the game with no guarantees they'll accept, pay the workers to make the game, ect. It would take like I said before, a huge amount of money that I bet Kadokawa doesn't even have. The demand for an Amagami remake or remaster is very high even in Japan itself. I've been reading a lot of posts about the Japanese fandom I've read countless times that they want the game to be playable on modern platforms. But here's the thing though like I said, even if the demand of the game is high, it's pointless if the people who created it can't afford it or view the idea of being too risky. It makes sense that there probably hesitant of doing anything right now considering their financial situation.
Although the company is failing like with any business it can always be brought back up. In recent years, the western community and other countries have been more open to Japanese games in the VN and Dating Sim genre. The VN market is also growing with strong potential of success. I know because I see it in the local game stores and in Steam's store. More people have been buying and playing VN's and dating sims nowadays especially on PC on Steam. I know for a fact Amagami would be a hit due to its history of being such a great game in the past and if they decide to open the game to other countries in multiple languages. Amagami is still very popular despite it being old. There are still special events and anniversaries in Japan for the anime and game with sometimes the voices of characters being present and their merch selling out quickly. If they open the game to the rest of the world, the existing people who watched the anime can play it but as well grab the growing attention of gamers who play VN's and dating sims.
Adding some more content to the game can also help with sales if done correctly. Within the Amagami fandom many "side characters" are very popular. Such as adding routes for Hibiki (Haruka's friend) and Keiko (Karou's friend), would expand the game, story, and give more options to the player. The anime adaption of Amagami has a second season called Amagami SS Plus which is just extra stories after the first season but was never part of the game itself. Adding the events from Amagami SS Plus to the game would further expand the arcs of each existing heroine, giving more playtime for the player for a single run.
I created this petition to show the creators behind Amagami that the Western Culture wants the game as well as much as their own people, but it can only be proven with evidence of demand. At the end of the day, Kadokawa is the one who has the power to do what they think is best. Even if the demand for the game is high, they will only do it if they are confident that the game will succeed. I hope that this petition is the ticket they need for that to happen.
I want to thank everyone who has supported me so far. The fandom and other fellow gamers. It brings me a lot of joy. If we support each other, we can definitely get this done. If there is any way you would like to help by sharing or promoting this, be sure to do so and know that me and others appreciate any help. Again, thank you, readers, for taking the time to read this article. WE CAN DO THIS! :)
