Letter grades were implemented at Staten Island Technical High School in 2017 and are still in effect to this day. Originally, letter grades were implemented in order to soothe the mental effects of “over achieving”. As students, we were told in 2017 that the highest possible grade for each letter range would be shown on our transcripts. However, as of 2019 for the 2019-2020 school year, the school has made it impossible to have a transcript numerical average of 100. The past two years an A+ average would be shown as a transcript numerical average of 100, but with this new change, the highest achievable score is a 98. As a specialized high school, students work hard to achieve their grades. This new grading system is unfair to the students who earned 100 averages in their classes through hard work and dedication to school. Students’ averages aren’t also affected but their grades in the class. Students study and work very hard to earn that perfect 100 on their exams and homeworks but with this new system “perfect” is now a 98. It also imposes a problem when applying to colleges, because the 4.0 GPA (that many students rightfully earn) is much harder to achieve because the highest score able to achieve is a 98. Also, averages that aren’t 100 are rounded down.  In addition, Staten Island Technical High School is in the process of eliminating the weighted average system (honor courses weighted at 1.05 and AP courses weighted at 1.1 for the calculation of each student's Cumulative Transcript GPA), which most high schools still have, allowing their students to obtain 100+ averages. Students from Staten Island Technical High School often apply to top colleges, and appeal to the colleges with their earned 4.0 GPA. The new grade system is unfair in that it takes the perfect GPA scores from students who have earned it, and therefore makes it harder to be accepted into these colleges. The new system also creates more mental health stress, which goes against why the letter grades were actually implemented. Clearly, Staten Island Technical High School has put into effect a new, unfair system of grading, which should be reverted to the 2018-2019 letter grade system and corresponding transcript numerical averages. Please sign this petition to help bring back the past grading system.
