The Issue
Certain dog breeds should not be discriminated against or banned
Imagine your dog confiscated by authorities and put down simply because he/she is of a breed your city has legislated against. Well, Breed Specific Legislation is a real issue. People should not be afraid of these animals, but they are still stigmatized with undeserved reputations., while they suffer in silence.
Good morning everyone, my name is Iliana Beauchamp, and I am here to argue why certain dog breeds should not be discriminated against or banned!
Dogs Suffer:
Currently, 39 different states have enacted breed-specific laws. To judge and treat certain dog breeds because of the actions of another is similar to banning a group of people from a community based on ethnicity or race. A dog is a dog, each one is different. News stories tend to highlight and amplify fears. Most people don’t understand the cruelty that so many stereotyped dogs face. To avoid detection, owners generally restrict their dogs’ socialization and outdoor exercise, to name a few. These actions can have a negative impact on both the physical and mental health of these dogs.
Stigmatized with Undeserved Reputations:
Most dogs aren't genetically threatening or dangerous. However, people think particular dogs are because of prevalent media fabrications, the judgment of attacks by specific breeds and propagation of myths. Even some irresponsible owners or breeders can wreck the reputation for an entire breed. According to One Green Planet, “Like any other dogs, they can become aggressive, mean and violent through a lack of training, abuse, neglect, and irresponsible ownership”. Breeding as well as a lack of attention to health and temperament issues. Dogs that are bred to look tough, aren't always what people think they are like.
Alternatives to breed-specific laws:
These Laws should be put in place instead of BSL laws. Laws that prohibit tethering, chaining, unreasonable confinement, and enhanced enforcement of animal cruelty and animal fighting laws. Laws that hold dog guardians civilly and criminally liable for unjustified injuries or damage caused by their dogs. Availability of low-cost sterilization, and community-based approaches to resolving this.
All breeds deserve a loving home. Act now by signing this petition to put an end to discrimination and banning against certain dog breeds. Let's be their voice!
