PETITION FOR IMPROVING THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IN NAGA CITY

PETITION FOR IMPROVING THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IN NAGA CITY
The Issue
We, 5th year students of Ateneo De Naga University, under the class of GCEM517-Transportation Engineering, petition the following:
1. Add proper (bigger and understandable) road signs especially on intersection roads. This is to help our commuters and riders to be mindful and careful on the road (whether driving or crossing the road). Also, the traffic in Naga City worsens because we lack proper signages. One example is in Panganiban (to Mayon intersection), wherein the right side lanes are supposed to be only for vehicles veering right(on intersections). However, some drivers tend to occupy those lanes which causes more congestion. Lastly, other traffic signages are already toppled or erased in Naga City.
2. Number coding for vehicles, especially for private cars. In Naga City, traffic congestion keeps on getting worse as time goes by. Instead of having their own cars that would cause traffic, this is to encourage individuals to commute. This will help to reduce the car loads that use the lane. Some car owners go to work (or anywhere) and prefer to park their cars on the side of the road, causing considerable congestion as the roads of Naga City are too narrow. The key concept of this Number Coding is: there are specific registered plate numbers that are allowed during a specific time and day. This is to prevent the overcrowding of traffic on the road (as far as possible). Plus, we should allow everybody to choose between biking, walking or using bicycles.
3. Strict implementation of road/traffic regulations. Some people nowadays are getting ignorant when it comes to traffic rules. If traffic rules are not strictly enforced, issues in traffic will get worse. Also, extortion, a toxic Filipino trait, should be eliminated. Authorities should set an example to the public, because if they cannot show a sign of discipline to themselves, the public will take these traffic rules and regulations a jest. Other countries like Singapore and Hongkong have practiced discipline especially in traffic matters and we can see how unbeaten their country is.
4. To adopt carpooling services similar to other countries. These include a shift from private cars to public transport and clean car sharing. It helps reduce emission of harmful gasses in the environment. Moreover, it will be a great avenue to encourage commuters to save their time, energy, and money and at the same time, benefiting our environment.
We believe we could be helped by our Local Government Unit on these topics. We hope for the better traffic system in Naga City. Let us not wait until our city is placed on a list with the worst traffic problems. Thank you!
