Thor Normann started this petition to Local Government and Environmental impact representatives

Pierre Passerini, Managing Director of Windmeul Eggs and Humpty Dumpty eggs has illegally (without an EIA*) built 1 of 5 planned giant chicken barns for farming chicken eggs on a farm in Tulbagh. If any of the points raised below resonate with you, please sign our petition to help in the efforts to stop this project.

The objection for this planned caged chicken farm are the following:

1) The illegal activity that has continued despite municipal and Dept of Environmental affairs knowledge – a dangerous precedent. Levelled the site for a second and unlawfully built across a watercourse

2) The large development is a bio security threat to the natural in indigenous animal life in the area due to Avian influenza and accompanying risks of bird factory farming such as rodent control affecting the predators and birds of prey. Despite being in full operation – there are no bio security measures mentioned in the S24G application or at the farm.

3) These buildings are not in theme with the natural beauty of the valley and pose a risk to the guest accommodation businesses in the area, not to mention the danger from increased traffic in the form of trucks transporting waste, eggs and chicken food on a narrow and infrequently maintained district road.

4) The battery cage farming is an outdated and cruel farming method that has already been banned and being phased out in some countries abroad due to increasing concerns over environmental and public health threats that come with consuming these eggs

5) Illegal construction and law breaking without consequence is a breach of our constitution & fundamental human rights to protect the livelihood of our citizens and natural abundance we are blessed with. Deep corporate pockets should not be able fly above the law squashing the 'little guys' & the environment in the process. If these unlawful developments are not stopped it paves the way for future “unlawful” development – giving people the confidence to do whatever they please.

*(EIA) An environmental impact assessment is a mandatory process of assessing the environmental consequences and viability of a project, and ways of mitigating harm. The process requires an open and transparent engagement with the public, and that stakeholder concerns are properly taken into account
