Traci Fant started this petition to Local authorities and decision makers and

Total miscarriage of justice. He was 17 years old at the time of the incident following the instructions of someone else, and they weren't charged. House was vacant because the homeowner was relocating. He had a gun, however the home was unoccupied and noone was hurt. He was a first time offender, placed on ankle monitoring for 2 years with no violations. He had a paid attorney, no public defender. However on Sept. 1, 2021 19 year old Jaden Gary was found guilty of first-degree burglary, grand larceny and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime at the conclusion of a jury trial. Sentenced 20 years with no parole. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been held accountable for his actions however 20 years is a very steep sentence for a 17 year old first time offender. After he committed the crime was there any intervention? Any counseling? Did anyone try to mentor him to lead him down the right path? Did they take into consideration that his father passed 6 months before he committed this crime? (The man killed his father was sentenced to 20 years). Was he offered probation or PTI? Did he qualify for the youth offender act? Truth is, when it comes to african american children the opportunity for 2nd chances seems irrelevant in most cases. They are given extremely long sentences with no attempts to counsel to get a better understanding of any preexisting issues that may have lead to poor choices. Jaden will have to serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for release.
I met with his mom, I'm going to assist her as best I can...and hopefully we will set a new tone for change within South Carolina judicial system... Peace.
