A quick update for you on our "little petition that could"!
Sobeys announced today that they are eliminating plastic bags by the end of January 2020. A really encouraging development!
Earlier this week, I updated Loblaw with our petition numbers, and received a reply. They say they are working "very diligently" on the issue of plastic food packaging, although they haven't unveiled their plans just yet. Still no word as to when that might happen.
There was a story that appeared in the media in June stating that Loblaw is the only Canadian retailer to enter into partnership with a company known as LOOP. As a consumer, you'll be able to buy a range of household products delivered to your home in a re-useable shipping tote. When you're finished using the products, the packaging is collected, cleaned, refilled and reused. It's kind of like the old milkman style of delivery from last century. The pilot project is slated to go ahead in Toronto in early 2020. Will it roll out nationally? Stay tuned.
In the meantime... If Sobeys can eliminate plastic bags, so can Loblaw. If you haven't signed our petition, please add your name and forward it to your friends. The more signatures we have, the more leverage we have! Thank-you!!!!
