The issue

As an advocate for inclusive education, I firmly believe that all students, regardless of their academic proficiency, should be afforded the opportunity to select English courses that align with their learning styles, skill levels, and interests. Currently, Scots All Saints are offering  only Advanced English and English Studies classes (which is a non-ATAR subject), which limits choices for those students who might benefit from and excel in a Standard English curriculum.

Standard English provides a balanced approach, focusing on practical language skills that prepare students for real-world applications, including tertiary education and the workforce. It's a vital stepping stone for students who find Advanced English too challenging, yet require more engagement than English Studies offers, and who still desire an ATAR. By integrating Standard English into the year 11 curriculum, the school can address a critical gap in the school's English curriculum and ensure inclusivity and equity.

Moreover, a diverse English curriculum can contribute to higher retention rates and increased student engagement. When students find courses that resonate with their abilities and interests, they are more likely to stay focused, motivated, and eventually succeed.

I urge educators, school administrators, at Scots All Saints to consider this pressing need for diversity in English subject offerings. Let’s work together to create a School that truly caters to every student's needs, potential, and aspiration.

Join me in lobbying for the inclusion of Standard English at Scots All Saints for the Year 11 cohort of 2027 by signing this petition. Together, we can champion a more inclusive and flexible learning environment for our children as they enter their Year 11 and 12 studies.
