Campaign for additional sports facilities in Loanhead

The Issue

Loanhead has a wonderful football heritage. At the present time and going forward, football in Loanhead is now in the capable hands of Loanhead Miners’ Youth FC.

Originally formed in 1964 as Eskdale Boys Club, the club has developed into an excellent example of a grass roots community football organisation. The club has over 300 playing members, mainly drawn from Loanhead, Bilston and Roslin. It is currently operating 14 teams (including 3 girls’ teams) with activities ranging from the soccer tots/kids’ school for 3-5 year olds, through to walking football for the over 50’s. Its activities are supported by 35 volunteer SFA qualified coaches.

Based at the Bayne Memorial Hall in Burghlee Crescent, the club received a Community Award under the SFA Quality Mark Scheme, the first club in Midlothian to achieve this status. Further development is however currently being hampered by a lack of facilities. The club urgently requires a floodlit all weather pitch to allow coaching sessions and training to take place over the winter months. Such facilities in Midlothian are currently being centred on hubs situated at high schools. It is however important that we have such facilities in Loanhead, allowing our young footballers to play and train in their home town as opposed to having to travel elsewhere.

There is also a shortage of grass pitches. Recent and ongoing developments have resulted in the loss of considerable amounts of playing field space in Loanhead. Our growing community needs more such space, not less. An additional pitch on the land between Burghlee Park and the Park Avenue Playing Field would help create an ideal sporting centre with the Bayne Memorial Hall and the nearby Memorial Park. Vacant land adjacent to the Ramsay Campus is another possibility.

Loanhead Miners’ Youth FC seeks the support of the wider Loanhead community to campaign for these facilities, possibly part funded by contributions from developers moving into the area. If you back these aims, please demonstrate your support by signing our petition.    #3G4LOANHEAD
