LMSD Superintendent Mumin & LMSD Board Members:

We, the undersigned Lower Merion School District (“LMSD”) families and taxpayers, understand that LMSD is solely responsible for setting and administering mask policies designed to mitigate the spread of COVID amongst LMSD students and our broader community.  Further, we understand that while guidance from the Montgomery County Office of Public Health is available to us, such guidance is non-binding and intended to inform, but not direct, LMSD decision making.  Last, we believe that the risks to LMSD students and our broader community have receded in recent weeks – at the same time that potential costs of mandated student masking have become clear.

Accordingly, we ask Superintendent Mumin to design a program for LMSD schools to adopt a “mask optional” policy, under which LMSD parents and students decide whether to mask at school, to replace the current mandate in place.  We ask the LMSD Board to approve this policy as soon as possible.  We ask Superintendent Mumin to implement the “mask optional” policy by March 14.

Additionally, LMSD appears to be the last Montgomery County district to require elementary school recess masking.  We respectfully ask that recess be made “mask optional” immediately.
