No More Overwhelming Google Meets and Work HHS 2020
The Issue
Sitting on Google meets for 6 hours a day is not acceptable nor fair for the school to expect of us. The average attention span of a person is 10 to 20 minutes, not 6 hours.The school and the district needs to take students' mental health into consideration, since we are in fact the people being affected by the decisions that they make, and they need to listen to us. And since face to face interactions with teachers have been limited, it is only fair to us that they change how we work in our favor, because this learning environment is not suitable for most students' success.
A lot of people are failing classes, not because our teachers aren't trying to give us opportunities or we don't have a drive to learn, but because this is simply not how people learn. I would encourage parents to sign this petition as well, as you have a say in this too. The world is already crazy enough right now and this online way of learning is not helping social isolation, but is only adding to those stresses.
Our proposal is this: Make Google meet shorter, or not mandatory, and each assignment is a bigger percentage of our grade, so that teachers can assign less. Teachers should use google classroom to assign work in the stream instead of using google meets. And while google meets are definitely also a tool that teachers can make available for kids that need it, 6 hours of it is too much for most students to handle.
Students' mental health should be taken more into consideration, because we are in fact the people who are affected by the decisions of the school and district, and I think most of us feel that we do not have a say in how we are being taught.
I would also just like to start a conversation between the school or district, and the students. Because there should be communication between what everyone wants and needs. And what was said here was just a proposal, not a take it or leave it offer. So start talking, and there will be change for the better that will benefit everyone as a whole.
