Listen to Cranford

The Issue

Hounslow has one of the highest concentrations of asylum seekers in London, with 69% of the 2,302 asylum seekers residing in hotel accommodations.

We, the concerned residents of Cranford, urge Hounslow Council to prioritize transparent communication and active engagement with local communities affected by the decision to house asylum seekers in hotels, such as the Double Tree by Hilton in Cranford. While we fully support the humane treatment of asylum seekers, it is equally important to consider the potential impact on local neighborhoods, including increased strain on public services, infrastructure, and community cohesion.

Cranford residents are concerned about the significant strain that housing asylum seekers in the DoubleTree hotel may place on local healthcare services, schools, and public transport, which are already under pressure. The lack of prior consultation with the community has left residents feeling excluded and unprepared to address these additional challenges. Effective planning and community engagement are essential to ensure the well-being of both asylum seekers and local residents.

The Chartered Institute of Housing emphasizes the importance of involving local communities in decision-making processes to foster understanding, improve service delivery, and strengthen community cohesion. We urge Hounslow Council to adopt these best practices by engaging Cranford residents in open dialogue and exploring alternative, sustainable solutions.

Cranford already faces significant challenges, many of which have not been adequately addressed by the council. We urge the authorities to consider alternative, equitable approaches that balance the needs of asylum seekers with the welfare of the local community.

We urge Hounslow Council, the Home Office and any other relevant agencies to have an open discussion with the communities that this impacts directly.
