Lincoln Elementary School Needs a Fence
The Issue
As a concerned parent, the safety of my children is my utmost priority. Like many parents in our community, I entrust Cache County School District to provide a secure and nurturing environment for our children. However, the lack of a fenced perimeter around the school's playground leaves our children vulnerable to potential outside dangers, which is why I am urging the relevant authorities to install a fence around the school playground before that start of the 26-27 school year.
The school district has the opinion that a fence is not necessary. However, I strongly disagree, and I believe many other parents, staff, and community members do as well. Currently, vehicles are allowed to pull up directly next to the field where students play via a road and city parking lot. Stray balls and other playground equipment also have the potential to lure kids into the same road and parking lot.
Having a fence around the playground is a crucial safety measure. It serves as a barrier that protects our children from wandering into unsafe areas and prevents unauthorized individuals from entering the school premises during recess or after school hours. Furthermore, a secured playground can help staff effectively monitor students, ensuring they are accounted for and safe at all times.
Statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics indicate that secure school facilities significantly reduce the instances of accidents and unauthorized entries. Ensuring our school is safeguarded with a fence is a proactive step towards reducing these risks and enhancing student safety.
Moreover, local schools that have implemented fencing have observed improved security and peace of mind among both parents and staff.
To clarify, this is just for around the playground and adjacent field to the west next to the street as well as a proper vehicle gate on the west side instead of plastic cones. This is just a partial fencing following the current property lines to meet safety standards held at other Cache County elementary schools. This isn’t a complete enclosure. Drills will still be able to be held like at other schools. I can’t see any downsides other than a few thousand dollars to pay for the fence. Access can still be included to the playground after hours.
The installation of a fence around the school playground is a reasonable, achievable goal that would demonstrate our commitment to protecting the well-being of our children.
I urge the district officials to prioritize this necessary safety measure. Together, we can create a safe haven for our students to learn, play, and grow.
