I think that there should be a limited amount or no homework in middle school. Middle schoolers should get time for relaxing and taking a break from stressful schoolwork. There should be a limited amount so that students can have free time where they don't have to worry about anything or getting an assignment in on time. There are lots of arguments against homework.

First, a study by Denise Pope, a Stanford University researcher, shows the negative effects of homework. She studied from a sample of 4,317 students from 10 well-performing middle schools, An article written by Clifton B. Parker gives an overview of her study. As the article states, "56 percent of the students considered homework a primary source of stress, according to the survey data." This shows that of the students that were doing homework, for an average of 3.1 hours, there was only less than one percent who did not get overly stressed out about their homework. This might be similar to what students at most middle schools feel when given too much homework. Next, another point that Pope draws on is that homework has effects on the health of students. As the article points out, "In their open-ended answers, many students said their homework load led to sleep deprivation and other health problems." This is referring to problems such as headaches, exhaustion, not getting enough sleep, stomach problems, and more. For most students, this was the case, caused by staying up too late and doing too much homework assigned by teachers. The last point she makes is that homework took time away from extracurricular activities that the students enjoyed doing. As the article says, "Both the survey data and student responses indicate that spending too much time on homework meant that students were 'not meeting their developmental needs or cultivating other critical life skills,' according to the researchers." Because these students were getting too much homework, it was taking away from their life outside of school. These students who get too much homework may have to drop out of activities and hobbies they enjoy, such as sports, music, and drama, just so they could get their homework in on time. The article shows just what it did to these students,

Secondly, an article written by the Huffington Post shows just how unnecessary homework really is. While homework is still good, it needs to be limited and the middle school level. First, in the article, it says, "The assumption that teachers are just assigning homework badly, that we’d start to see meaningful results if only it were improved, is harder and harder to justify with each study that’s published." This is saying that while teachers are assigning too much homework, there is a way to fix the issue, by limiting the homework, for example. Another thing to consider, the teacher could always try to fit more learning into the class so that the students could justify themselves and not have to take too much of their outside time to do homework. As the article says the moral of the research is, "The better the research, the less likely one is to find any benefits from homework." This is showing that even with better research, the more that someone will dig into the benefits of homework, the less that they are going to find. While homework may be useful for memorization purposes, it does not help the student benefit in school overall. A study that the article talks about, it says that kids should be able to explore other things outside of school instead of having to deal with a load of homework.

To conclude, whether it is studies saying that homework should be limited, or abolished all together, homework should definitely be limited in our school. Limiting homework will have great effects on the school as a whole and the feelings of the students who attend it. There should be a fine line where homework is substantial, but not nearly enough to interfere with other activities outside of school. If homework is limited, the well being of the students in the school will be improved greatly.
